A dinner at Cracco’s new spot

25 Jan

Carlo Cracco is one of the most talented italian Chefs. He is seen as a pioneer in progressive Italian cuisine. He is universally acclaimed for his innovative take on classic Italian foods, combining the Milanese tradition with modern tastes and aesthetics. His brainchild, Cracco Restaurant was born in 2007 and has retained two Michelin stars.

He is one the the hosts for the Masterchef italian version and recently opened his second restaurant in Milan.

Last night I dined at Carlo e Camilla in Segheria. The space has been designed wonderfully, a really cool interior. The wine and cocktail menu is interesting and the bartenders are happy to walk you through it and help you choose based on what you feel like. Service was fantastic as was the food.

Great job Carlo!

Truffle and Bordeaux

20 Jan

Château Brulesecaille 1998 is a red wine, made by Château Brulesecaille. Its origin is Côtes de Bourg in Bordeaux, France. It is made from a Red Bordeaux blend. I kept it for so many years in my cellar in Italy that I almost forgot about it.

Red Bordeaux Blends are known for their powerful structure and deep flavors. Dark fruits and berries such as plum and blackcurrant are commonly used to describe the flavors of red Bordeaux, although there is an unlimited range of terms that have been ascribed to them. Tannins tend to be relatively high in these wines, giving them a firm structure

A dear friend gave me some truffle. I love truffle…it’s a fantastic pairing with my Bordeaux wine. And with some freshly prepared tagliatelle it was heaven

What a better way to taste it?

Faccoli and Arici, my favorites in Franciacorta

10 Jan

I can’t stop saying it…I love Franciacorta.

This time I returned to one of my favorite Winemakers Faccoli in Coccaglio in the heart of Franciacorta.

The always welcoming and nice Claudio let me taste all of his fantastic range of products…one better than the other. But the Dosage Zero still remains my favorite. It represents the research of the company, made possible by the experience gained through years of sparkling process. It’s complex, fresh and with a great persistence.

An other great Winemaker with an other amazing range of products was my second stop Arici. Andrea treated me like an old friend and gave me the opportunity to taste his production. Andrea is the only winemaker that produces exclusively Franciacorta ‘not measured’ (Zero Dosage) able to reveal the characteristics of the soil, worked daily by Him with stubborn conviction and enthusiasm, with full respect for nature still alive and flourishing around those vineyards. In two words: simply perfection!

Thank you guys for these special treats! See you next time

Barbaresco Gaja 2004

20 Dec

Gaja is a god of Italian Winemakers. His wines are pure pleasure and passion

Barbaresco is one of the great wines of the Piedmont region. This aristocratic red was awarded its DOCG classification in 1980. Its vineyards are situated in the Langhe.

This is Nebbiolo in purezza, 100% Nebbiolo grapes which are distinguished by their strong tannins, high acidity and distinctive scent – often described as “tar and roses”

Angelo Gaja’s passion and commitment are reflected in the huge personality and concentration of the wines which have mind-blowing, myriad flavours and terrific volume and length on the palate. Stunning with a typical italian dish Casseoula…a stew with pork, sausage and cabbage perfect for the long winter season.

Italian Tasting Experience

9 Nov

What a tasting!

Last evening we had an other fantastic italian experience path.

Starting with an amazing bollicina rosè as an aperitivo we got deeper into more italian whites and reds while learning interesting details about what we were drinking. It’s always good to know where the different grapes come from and how they are turned into marvellous wines.

We got together through discovering the wines with all the questions raised by you guys. A good interactive meeting. A moment for learning and enjoying at the same time.

We tried some amazing products from Vietti, Ceretto and more.

Here is the wine menu with pairing we enjoyed:

Tignanello – Nectar of the gods

25 Aug

Tignanello

No words can describe it in the deep. I mean…you only have to drink it to completely understand it.

You can’t help but love this wine. The richness, density and intensity are all outstanding and Tignanello is extraordinary in terms of aromas and flavors.

This is one of everyone’s must do list!

The original Super Tuscan, Tignanello is produced exclusively from a 116-acre vineyard site at Antinori’s Tignanello Estate.

It’s a blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.

Wow! The quality of the wine can be felt already on the nose.

The 2007 Tignanello is intense ruby red in color with primary aromas of concentrated, ripe fruit and spice, which give way to milder notes of vanilla and toast. Generous, richly textured and intense on the palate, this wine possesses a complex structure and long persistent flavors with hints of chocolate, huckleberries and black plums on the finish. The well-managed tannin blends perfectly with the oak, for a complex and elegant wine.

I didn’t want the bottle to end.

This is by far one of my favorite Italian red and I wish I could personally thank Pietro Antinori for creating this.

Enjoy !!

Dorigo – a taste of what Friuli has to offer

21 Aug

I visited Alessio and Cristina Dorigo after they had moved operations to a new base near Povoletto, his father having retired and sold the old winery at Buttrio. It is only 15 minutes away but it felt like a very new start.

This area is the Collio Orientali del Friuli ( = COF), just north of, and in many ways a continuation of, the Collio DOC. But I particularly wanted to come here as they have a reputation for red wines as well as whites, including those from local varieties. In fact they have a comprehensive selection of wines, many of which we tasted in a very generous tasting.

I tried some of their best products from white to red, from Ronc di Juri to Pignolo. What a great taste!

The Dorigo winery was created in 1966 with the purchase of two vineyards, Ronc di Juri at Buttrio and Montsclapade, at Premariacco. These are ancient local place names, meaning the “Juri Vineyard”, after the family that for generations cultivated the land before we arrived, and the “Split Mountain”, because of the road that slices the summit in two.

During the tasting we discuss the wine scene in Friuli. The first half of the century saw one disaster after another, whether oenological (phylloxera) or even more seriously two world wars – Friuli had been at the centre of the old Austrian empire which was passing away and was caught in the thick of the action.

After the war the first priority was quantity and so there was a lot of planting on the plain. It was only in the 1970s with a tiny group of pioneers – which included Girolamo Dorigo – that the new path to quality and contemporary, fresh and expressive wines was set.

Dorigo do produce a great range of red wines from local varieties – Schioppettino, Refosco at two quality levels, Tazzelenghe and Pignolo.

The Dorigo family has been a pioneer in modern Friulian viticulture and I have no doubt that the next generation will now take it forward from their new estate – ten hectares of vines in Buttrio and ten in Povoletto.

There is a message in Dorigo bottles. It tells of their love for the land and its fruits, the dedication of the people who work it, and their excitement when grapes are transformed into that most noble of beverages, wine.

Nobilo Sauvignon Blanc

20 Aug

IMG_0439

This is a lovely representation of what New Zealand can produce at a great price!

Another wine from New Zealand? I told you! I love them!

This time I tried a Sauvignon Blanc from Nobilo.

So rich in history, Nobilo wines are proudly hailed as some of New Zealand’s most respected pioneering wine brands. A Croat immigrant, Nikola Nobilo, whose family history and winemaking background stretches back over 300 years to the Adriatic island of Korcula off the Dalmatian coast, led the way. The history of the company in New Zealand goes back to the early 1940’s when this Croatian family, landed in New Zealand. They settled in Huapai, West Auckland situated in the North Island of New Zealand, and started planting vines in 1943. With over 300 years of European wine history, this family effectively persuaded and guided the NZ wine industry away from hybrid grape varieties and fortified wines, to a higher level of quality wine, now recognized and appraised by all markets.

A rich, complex, full bodied wine with a striking bouquet of passion fruit, gooseberries and nettles. Opulent tropical fruit flavors, complemented by herbal and mineral characters lead to a persistent finish. Sophisticated and delicious.

Pair with oysters! Delicious!

Simon Selosse – you won’t stop drinking it!

19 Aug

champagne

Honestly I’m not a big Champagne fan. I usually prefer Franciacorta wines.

Sometimes for having a good Champagne you have to spend a lot of money! This is not happening with Franciacorta that gives you great results even with the inexpensive bottles…

But I have to say that this is really very good! And a great value!

Magnificent golden hue. Very expressive, highly endearing nose of white fruits, mild spices. The palate displays seductive, well-integrated exuberance and focused, long-lasting scents. A wine for serious food that works well with fish and charcuterie.
